Origins
Neumorphism emerged in late 2019 as a softer alternative to flat design, often dated to designer Alexander Plyuto's Dribbble banking mockup. The term, a blend of new and skeuomorphism, is commonly associated with Jason Kelly and Michał Malewicz. Glassmorphism and Claymorphism followed as sibling reactions, each swapping in a different material metaphor for the same soft, rounded, depth-driven approach.
Visual language
All three abandon hard borders and bold flat fills in favour of rounded corners and depth built from light. Neumorphism extrudes or dents elements out of a single background colour using paired light and dark shadows, inverting them for pressed states. Glassmorphism floats translucent frosted panels over blurred backgrounds. Claymorphism renders chunky, inflated 3D shapes with soft shading. Typography stays clean and sans serif, subordinate to the surfaces.
Palette and type
Neumorphism leans on off-white and light grey monochrome so shadows do the work. Glassmorphism uses pale translucent tints over colourful blurred backdrops. Claymorphism favours pastel and candy colours on matte 3D forms. Type across all three is simple, rounded, and legible, rarely decorative.
What it signals
The trio reads as polished, friendly, and tactile, signalling a modern app or product surface. Neumorphism can feel subtle to the point of invisibility, while glass and clay read as more playful and approachable. They communicate softness and craft over utility.
Where it works
Suits app mockups, dashboards, landing pages, and product showcases where a soft tactile mood helps. Neumorphism struggles with accessibility and bright-light legibility, so avoid it for critical controls. Glass and clay risk looking trendy or overused when applied to every surface.
